FREEDOM QUOTES III

quotations about freedom

Freedom quote

Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

WILLIAM PITT

speech, Nov. 18, 1783

Unless your freedom turns into a creative realization, you will feel sad. Because you will see that you are free--your chains are broken, and you are no longer in prison; you are standing under the starry night, completely free. But where do you go?

OSHO

Freedom: The Courage to Be Yourself

Any existence deprived of freedom is a kind of death.

MICHEL AOUN

attributed, Dictionary of Quotations

Freedom and not servitude is the cure of anarchy; as religion, and not atheism, is the true remedy of superstition.

EDMUND BURKE

Freedom has a scent
Like the top of a new born baby's head

This is my right
A right given by God
To live a free life
To live in freedom

PAUL MCCARTNEY

"Freedom"

They never fail who die
In a great cause: the block may soak their gore:
Their heads may sodden in the sun; their limbs
Be strung to city gates and castle walls--
But still their Spirit walks abroad. Though years
Elapse, and others share as dark a doom,
They but augment the deep and sweeping thoughts
Which overpower all others, and conduct
The world at last to Freedom.

LORD BYRON

Marino Faliero

Any bonds today?
Bonds of freedom
That's what I'm selling
Any bonds today?
Scrape up the most you can
Here comes the freedom man

DUKE ELLINGTON

"Any Bonds Today?"

For those who have it, freedom is like oxygen, it's something we just have. Many will not understand just how precious either is until they are at risk of losing it.

JOHN DUTCHER

"Crowd turns out for parade under beautiful sunny skies Monday", Gloversville Leader-Herald, May 28, 2019

Can this be happiness, this terrifying freedom?

ALBERT CAMUS

Caligula

Freedom is a heavy load, a great and strange burden for the spirit to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice may be a hard one. The road goes upward towards the light; but the laden traveler may never reach the end of it.

URSULA K. LE GUIN

The Tombs of Atuan

Freedom to reject is the only freedom.

SALMAN RUSHDIE

The Ground Beneath Her Feet

Love of country follows from the exercise of its freedoms, not from pride in its fleets or its armies.

LEWIS H. LAPHAM

"Them", Lapham's Quarterly: Foreigners, winter 2014

True freedom is to share
All the chains our brothers wear

JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL

"Stanzas on Freedom"

I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations.

JAMES MADISON

speech at the Virginia Convention to ratify the Federal Constitution, Jun. 6, 1788

Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom.

ALBERT EINSTEIN

Out of My Later Years

Mistaking insolence for freedom has always been the hallmark of the slave.

WILHELM REICH

Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.

JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU

The Social Contract

Heaven's blessing must attend all, and freedom must soon be given to the pining millions under a ruthless bondage.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS

My Bondage and My Freedom

Modern European and American history is centered around the effort to gain freedom from the political, economic, and spiritual shackles that have bound men. The battles for freedom where fought by the oppressed, those who wanted new liberties, against those who had privileges to defend. While a class was fighting for its own liberation from domination, it believed itself to be fighting for human freedom as such and thus was able to appeal to an ideal, to the longing for freedom rooted in all who are oppressed. In the long and virtually continuous battle for freedom, however, classes that were fighting against oppression at one stage sided with the enemies of freedom when victory was won and new privileges were to be defended.
